There are dreams that quietly wait in the background, and there are dreams that keep nudging you until you can no longer ignore them. Our dream of traveling the world clearly belonged to that second category. On our very first date, we said it out loud. We wanted to explore the world. Not for a few weeks a year, but in a way that would give us space to learn, discover and grow.

Still, the dream remained something for later for a long time. There was always a reason not to leave yet. Work, homes, responsibilities and the belief that waiting for the perfect moment made more sense. But that perfect moment never arrives on its own. At some point you realise that waiting costs more than trying.

One day we asked ourselves the question that changed everything. What if we never do this. That thought stayed with us and gave direction. Not because we suddenly had all the answers, but because we felt we no longer wanted to choose a kind of security that didn’t match the life we envisioned. So we decided to take the leap and begin the intense preparation for a world trip. The dream turned into a plan, and from that plan our life began to change.

Letting Go: World Trip Preparation Starts with Selling Our Home

Deciding to travel the world felt like taking a deep breath. Something clicked into place. We knew this wasn’t just a practical shift but a reshaping of our entire life. That is why the first steps in preparing for long term travel were big and unmistakable. Selling our home and closing Kevin’s company. These were the foundations of our life at that moment, so they became the first actions we took.

Selling our home brought relief, but also a feeling of irreversibility. It made our world trip real. It showed us that this was no longer a dream you can easily put on hold. At the same time, we realised that closing a business involves far more than you expect. You dive into rules, forms, deadlines and systems you never knew existed.

Beyond those major steps, we found ourselves researching things we had never needed to consider before. How do you arrange international travel insurance when you no longer have a fixed home address. How does banking work when you live as digital nomads. Which vaccinations do you need for long term travel and where do you get them when you already live abroad. And how do you even begin to estimate the cost of a world trip when the difference between scenarios can be thousands of euros.

We quickly discovered that much of the information available is not designed for people living outside traditional systems, especially when it comes to long term travel. Every question became a puzzle. But every puzzle also brought us closer to the life we were building.

During this phase we started selling our belongings. It created space in our house and even more space in our minds. Every item that left felt like a new step towards freedom. As if we were lightening our lives while stepping into something much bigger.

At the same time, we made the decision to document this entire journey from the very beginning. We wanted to share the real story of how a world trip comes to life. The questions, the doubts, the discoveries and the emotional layers that usually stay invisible. That is why we started creating content while Kevin still worked full time and Nancy continued her coaching work. It made our days busier, but also richer.

How Preparing for a World Trip Truly Feels

Preparing for a long term world trip feels like a mix of freedom, anticipation and a constant stream of new insights. Freedom because we finally started moving toward something we had wanted for so long. Anticipation because most of this process was completely new to us. And new insights because almost every day teaches us something we have never needed before.

Some days everything feels clear. We sit together with a cup of coffee, talking about the countries we want to visit, the cultures we want to understand and the kind of life we want to create on the road. Those moments give energy. They spark curiosity. They make the future feel bright and spacious.

Other days the smallest things can pull you out of that flow. A form, an appointment, a missing document, a rule that is explained nowhere. Suddenly the process feels overwhelming again and you understand why many people find this leap scary. But this shift between trust and chaos is exactly what creates growth. It turns the world trip into more than a journey. It becomes a transformation.

Unexpected Challenges: Long Term Travel Insurance and Administration

Preparing for a world trip sounds romantic and adventurous, but it also includes a very practical layer you cannot avoid. Especially in Spain, we noticed how much time and energy certain things actually require. Something simple like arranging a vaccination can turn into a route from doctor to clinic and back again. The logic is not always clear, and patience becomes your only tool.

Finding proper long term travel and health insurance was another major challenge. Because Nancy has Type 1 Diabetes, we had to look far beyond standard coverage. Reading policy conditions became almost a daily task. Sometimes it felt like insurers spent more time explaining what they do not cover than what they do. Eventually we chose SafetyWing. Not because it is perfect, but because it allows us to start. Whether it works well in practice is something we will share in a future blog.

Financially, this is the most unpredictable period. The house is sold. The business is being closed. We have savings. But nobody can precisely calculate what remains once all the administrative steps are completed. The differences can be thousands of euros. That makes detailed planning impossible, so we try to stay flexible, honest and realistic.

The Beautiful Side of Preparing for a World Trip

Despite the paperwork, logistics and uncertainty, the preparation for a world trip is filled with joy, curiosity and connection. We feel the dream becoming more tangible every week. It is no longer something we talk about; it is something we are building. That makes almost every step meaningful.

The prospect of freedom plays a big role here. The idea that soon we will not live according to a fixed rhythm but according to our curiosity feels like a relief. That we can work from inspiration instead of obligation. That we can explore new places without rushing through them. That we can set the pace of our own life.

Preparing for this lifestyle has also deepened our relationship. We make every decision together, navigate obstacles as a team and build something that extends far beyond our day to day life. It sparks conversations about identity, the future, personal growth and what truly matters. It feels like we are rediscovering each other inside a new shared vision.

And perhaps most surprising of all is how much we are learning even before we begin. About travel, health, culture, finances, equipment, storytelling and the digital nomad lifestyle. It feels as if we are already expanding while still standing in the same place.

What Slow Travel and Our Digital Nomad Life Mean to Us

For us, this world trip is not a holiday. It is a shift in lifestyle. A commitment to authenticity. A leap into a version of life where we are not pushed by speed but are guided by intention.

We want to experience countries beyond the highlights. We want to understand how people live. We want to learn from cultures, habits and perspectives that differ from our own. And we want to let ourselves be surprised by everything we cannot plan.

Slow travel is the foundation of that intention. It gives us the freedom to stay longer when a place feels right and to move on when it is time for something new. It removes the pressure to collect experiences and gives space to truly live them.

What We Hope to Learn and Share Along the Way

We hope the world shows us how diverse and surprising life can be. We hope to gain insights you do not find in books or online. We hope to stay open to encounters that shift our perspective.

We want to share our experiences exactly as they are. Honest and unfiltered. Not only the magical moments but also the challenges and the vulnerable days. We hope this inspires, but also brings realism to a world where travel often gets portrayed as picture perfect. If our stories encourage someone to reflect on their own dreams, then this world trip becomes even more meaningful.

When We Leave and How It Begins

On April 17th, 2026, the sale of our home will be finalized. In the days that follow we will complete the last administrative steps in Spain and then begin our journey with a short period in the Netherlands. Afterwards we will return to Spain to sell our car before boarding a plane to our first destination. Most likely Indonesia, although the freedom of this digital nomad lifestyle is that nothing has to be final.

The leap has been made. The next step is leaving. And after that begins the life we have imagined for so long.
